Ways To Build Self Esteem

Why is Self Esteem so Important?  -  Self-esteem is the way you perceive yourself. Living in a society, we are always aware of others’ lives, which in turn influences our own. We need to compare ourselves at times compulsively to check how we stand in society. This causes us to be extra critical of our self.

As a result we allow our self-worth to fall and we become victims of low self-esteem. The question now arises, ‘why should I let my self esteem rule my life?’ the answer is simple – its because of your self-esteem that you hold your own in the social order. When you have a high self-esteem, you will be confident, your peers will notice this and follow you.

You will inspire confidence in all whom you meet. Perhaps you will even motivate a less confident individual. Similarly, when you interact with others, it is imperative that you be careful in your selection. It is these others who will influence your self-esteem.

If you have negative attitude around you, you too will  experience a fall in your self-esteem. Henry Ford put it perfectly ‘If you think you can, or you think you can’t, you are probably right.’ Self-esteem is important for success. He, who thinks success, achieves it.

It is all in the mind. If you have a good self-image, all around you will too. You will talk and walk with a self-assurance that sets you apart from others. If your self-worth is low, you will walk with a slouch, try and avert eye contact and generally look sloppy! Low self-esteem will cause you to be indecisive, inert and depressed. In such a situation, you tend to disregard your capabilities and begin to despair.

Then if you happen to come across a mean person, he or she would probably ridicule you and you would take it lying down. They will crush your personality! You would hesitate in retaliating due to self-pity. You lose initiative because you’d be so convinced that you are apt to fail. You start to doubt yourself and your insecurities begin to grow. It is thus advisable to avoid such people who would deprecate you.

As Mark Twain once said ‘Keep away from people who try to belittle your ambitions. Small people always do that, but the really great make you feel that you, too, can become great.’ Keep company of people who encourage you, who inspire you. It is these persons who will help you keep your self-worth high and imbibe confidence in your self. The important thing is to increase your self-confidence and keep working on it.
